Membership
Is YHAI membership required to join a programme?
Yes. YHAI membership is mandatory for all programmes, and you must validate your membership at the base camp during registration.
Who can become a YHAI member?
YHA India membership is open to Indian nationals with a valid ID and address proof. International travellers can use their Hostelling International cards to stay at our hostels.
Is my membership transferable?
No. Membership is personal and non-transferable, and once a membership number is generated it cannot be cancelled or altered.
What do I get with a membership?
Discounted stays at YHAI hostels (150+ locations across India), access to 4,000+ hostels in 90 countries through Hostelling International, 40,000+ member discounts worldwide via the YHAI–IYTC co-branded card, and the ability to join all YHAI adventure programmes.
Booking & Eligibility
What is the age limit for treks and camps?
Most programmes are open to those aged 18–65 in good physical and mental health. Some have stricter limits; participants over 65 may be considered offline if they are medically fit and meet the requirements.
Can I join as a solo traveller?
Absolutely. Most YHAI programmes are fixed group departures - you register individually and become part of a batch, so there is no need to form your own group.
How do I register for a programme?
Register online at www.yhaindia.org and pay by net banking or debit/credit card, or register offline through the National Office. After payment, carry your Admit Card, Medical Fitness Certificate and Membership Card.
Are the programmes subsidised or commercial?
YHAI is a registered non-profit. Programmes are priced affordably for youth of every means and are not subsidised by any government or donor - the value is hard for commercial operators to match.
Fitness, Health & Altitude
Do I need a medical certificate?
Yes. For high-altitude treks, a valid Medical Fitness Certificate signed by an MBBS/MD doctor is mandatory. Without a Medical Certificate and an Admit Card, your registration is not valid.
How fit do I need to be, and how should I prepare?
Start preparing 6–8 weeks before your trek. Aim for brisk walking or jogging (about 5 km in 35–40 minutes), and add stair-climbing, cycling and stretching to build stamina and strong knees.
What about altitude sickness (AMS)?
Follow the staged acclimatisation built into the itinerary, stay well hydrated, ascend gradually and never skip rest days. Report any symptoms to the medical officer immediately - oxygen and a medical team are available at the camps.
I have a medical condition - can I still trek?
Please consult your doctor and the trek coordinator before booking, especially for conditions such as asthma, sinus problems, epilepsy or heart issues, or if your BMI is outside the normal range.
What to Pack
What should I bring on a trek?
Quick-dry t-shirts, warm layers and a jacket, well-broken-in trekking shoes, a sun cap, gloves, a raincoat or poncho, sunglasses, sunscreen, a personal medical kit, and your own steel plate, mug and spoon.
Is equipment provided?
For certain programmes YHAI provides equipment - for example, the cycle, helmet and guards on cycling expeditions, and tents at the camps. Personal clothing and footwear are your responsibility.
At the Camp - Rules & Facilities
What facilities does YHAI provide on a trek?
Shared tent accommodation, nutritious vegetarian meals, a medical team with an ambulance, oxygen at every high-altitude camp, a support vehicle, and group insurance (for accidental death or permanent disability only).
What are the camp rules?
Smoking, alcohol and narcotics are strictly prohibited. Participants wash their own utensils, tents are arranged separately for men and women, no deviation from the set route is allowed, and outside stays during the programme are not permitted.
Is it an eco-friendly trek?
Yes. Please do not litter - carry back your waste and deposit it at the base camp. Burning wood at campfires is prohibited, and bringing non-biodegradable material (for example, plastic into J&K) is an offence.
Is the food vegetarian?
Yes - wholesome, nutritious vegetarian meals with a localised taste are served at the camps.
Safety
How does YHAI keep participants safe?
Through trained camp leaders and qualified medical officers, oxygen and first-aid at camps, support vehicles, carefully staged acclimatisation, and group insurance. Participants must follow the leaders’ instructions at all times.
Is travel insurance included?
Group insurance covers accidental death or permanent disability only. Personal travel and medical insurance is strongly recommended.
What are the risks involved?
High-altitude treks carry inherent risks such as altitude sickness, falls, and weather events like landslides or cloudbursts. YHAI takes maximum precautions but is not liable for accidents or circumstances beyond its control.
Payments, Cancellation & Refunds
What is the programme cancellation policy?
Cancel at least 5 days before your reporting date - online, or by email to trekking@yhaindia.org - to be eligible for a 100% Credit Shell or a 50% refund. Requests received within 5 days of the reporting date are not eligible.
What is a Credit Shell?
A 100% credit of your participation fee, valid till 31 December 2026 and usable on any YHAI adventure programme. If your next programme is cheaper you keep the balance; if it is costlier you pay the difference. A programme booked using a Credit Shell cannot be cancelled again, but the seat may be transferred to family or friends (non-re-transferable).
Are membership and hostel cancellations different?
Yes. Membership fees are non-refundable. For hostel bookings: 1–20 persons - 20% is deducted if cancelled 7+ days before arrival; 20+ persons - 50% is deducted if cancelled 15+ days before arrival; no refund after these periods.
What if YHAI cancels the programme?
If a programme is cancelled due to a natural calamity, government restriction or withdrawal of permission, YHAI is accountable only for the programme fee and not for other expenses you may have incurred.
Trekking in the Himalayas
When is the best time to trek in the Himalayas?
It depends on the trail. Spring and summer (March–June) suit most Himachal and Uttarakhand treks and alpine lakes; the monsoon window (July–September) is best for the Valley of Flowers and Kashmir Great Lakes; and December–March is the season for snow treks like Kedarkantha.
Will I have mobile network on the trek?
Often not. Make any important calls before you start, and share your trek coordinator’s number with your family for updates. In Leh, only postpaid BSNL and Airtel connections work.
Should I carry cash?
Yes. ATMs and digital payments are unreliable in remote trail regions, so carry enough cash for incidental expenses.
Is trekking with YHAI safe for women and solo female travellers?
Yes. YHAI makes separate arrangements for women trekkers and prioritises their safety, and every batch is supervised by trained camp leaders.
Do I need to carry my own backpack?
On most YHAI treks you carry your own rucksack with your essentials - it is part of the experience and the spirit of self-reliance the movement is built on. Pack light and only what you need.
